Yamanaka & Company was one of the most prolific and admired dealers of Asian art in Europe and United States in the late nineteenth century early twentieth century. A family business that was initially based in Osaka, Japan, it became a shareholding corporation and a global leader in selling Asian art mainly to a Western clientele. In 1894, the first gallery outside of Japan opened in New York City, with more branches following in Boston, Chicago, London, and Beijing, among other locations. Their prestigious clientele included the Rockefellers, Ernest Fenollosa, Charles Lang Freer, and Osvald Sirén, among many others. A broad array of objects sourced and retailed by the firm have entered the collections of numerous museums across the globe, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Rijksmuseum, Seattle Art Museum, Freer Gallery of Art, among others.
