Marcus & Co Sterling Silver Pierced Flower Fruit Basket Bowl
A sterling silver fruit or flower basket bowl by Marcus & Co. Pierced rim, acanthus motif on handle, standing on four scrolled feet. Measuring approximately 11 5/6 inches in length by 10'' in height by 9'' in width. Weighing 25.5 troy ounces. Bearing hallmarks as shown.
Herman Marcus came to New York from Germany in 1850 and started working as a designer at Tiffany & Co. He represented Tiffany at the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Marcus left Tiffany around 1884 to establish his own firm, Marcus & Co., with his two sons. Herman died in 1899 but his sons continued to run the company well into the 20th century. The company operated as a silversmith and jewelry maker.
