Engraved Silver Plate & Gilt Cups in 1894 Bird & Floral Design by Klingert
Engraved plate & cups in 1894 Bird & Nature design in 0.875 silver by famed Russian maker Gustav Klingert. The cups feature an elegant floral design and stand 4" high with a 3" diameter. The plate is engraved with lovebirds and is 8 3/4" across. Total weight is 23.2 ounces. Hallmarks as shown.
Gustav Klingert left his native Germany to work as a master for Fabergé and departed to Moscow in 1865--where he'd hire over 200 artisans as he launched his own factory. BY the time he exhibited at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893, his shop was known as one of the most important firms in Russia. Klingert began to export his pieces to the United States with an arrangement through Tiffany & Co., concentrating on silver gilt, cases, and tableware. As seen here, his pieces made before 1899 were marked with the Latin characters "GK," later changed to Cyrillic characters.
