Frans Gyllenberg for Handicraft Shop sterling silver bowl, beautifully hand-hammered in Boston Arts & Crafts style, from 1905. It measures 4 3/4'' in diameter by 2'' in height, weighs 6.2 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown.

Boston established a reputation during the first decades of the twentieth century for small-scale workshops producing high-quality silver hollowware. Handicraft Shop was one such cooperative, established under the aegis of the Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston. Early shop members included George Christian Gebelein, whose work favored the colonial-revival style, Seth Ek, F. J. R. Gyllenberg, Mary C. Knight, and C. G. Forssen. Frans Gyllenberg (1883-1974) probably served an apprenticeship in his native Sweden before moving to Boston and joining Handicraft Shop. Gyllenberg became a craftsman member of the Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston, and was promoted to master status in 1910. In 1929, Gyllenberg was elected a medalist craftsman, the society’s highest honor.
Gyllenberg participated in the annual exhibitions organized by the society in Boston and Chicago, entering brass candlesticks and small silver wares. The society occasionally featured Gyllenberg’s work in advertisements in magazines such as Arts and Decoration and International Studio. His work is now present in the collections of several prestigious museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
