Black, Starr & Frost sterling silver compote tazza or footed bowl, from the late 19th or early 20th century, in Art Nouveau style, with a pierced rim showcasing putti and stylized natural motifs. It measures 11 1/4'' in diameter (5 3/4'' excluding the rim) by 4'' in height, weighs 29.3 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks and a monogram as shown.

The oldest continuously operating jewelry firm in the United States, Black, Starr & Frost also produced objects in silver. Already in 1860, the company received an order for more than $12,000 of jewelry and silverware from Edward, Prince of Wales. In 1929, Black, Starr & Frost merged with Gorham Corporation, and was renamed Black, Starr, Frost-Gorham. Some of their pieces are present in the permanent collection of the New York Historical Society.
